When you talk about Japan’s next wave of football talent, Katsuma Fuse is a player to keep an eye on. At just 18, the Tsukuba University first-year has already earned a spot in the Japan U-20 national team.
A player who can do it all
While naturally a defensive midfielder, he’s just as comfortable playing in central midfield or either wingback role.
He’s been described in Japanese sports media as:
Good understanding of the game.
Mindset beyond his peers
Fuse is not just about physical tools; his great mentality is often visible. His self-imposed motto is “Never be satisfied”. This attitude partly explains why he chose university football over an immediate professional contract; he wanted to refine his technical game before stepping onto the J.League stage.
He’s candid about areas to improve: “My technical side still isn’t enough,” he told Gekisaka, reflecting on moments like missing a crucial penalty in high school, which he owns up to as “my responsibility.”
Making noise at Tsukuba University
Since joining Tsukuba in January 2025, Fuse has been one of the most exciting university talents. He made early starts, scored a debut goal, and continues to be in the spotlight thanks to his U-20 call-ups.
Katsuma Fuse's future
While there are no confirmed transfer rumours yet, Fuse’s profile is rising rapidly. With his physical presence, football IQ, and ability to play across the pitch, it’s only a matter of time before J. League scouts and European ones come knocking.
